The Shoes

In the past week, I've told 3 young people to avoid the teaching profession.  That does not feel good.  I have always been a booster for new teachers, applauding them with gusto.  But things aren't good right now in school land, peeps.  I even had a horrible school dream last night where someone was yelling at me and I ran away without shoes on.  Then today I read an article about Common Core in the NYT.  The testing with the core is going to be hideous and I sometimes wonder how I'm going to hang in there for the next 10 to 12 years.  I keep telling myself to shut off the school brain and move into sabbatical brain, but then I ignore myself and sit around stewing about schools and scores and standards.

On a good note, I'm seeing an independent film with Judith tonight.  Maybe she'll help me with a review.

I've just returned from the independent film, Augustine.
Saw the independent film with Judith. Judith has agreed to answer my questions about the film here in the comments section.

First, tho, the recap: Augustine is a maid in France in the 1800's. She has seizures and has to go into a weird hospital where a doctor, Mr. Charcot, does weird experiments on her.

Okay, Judith, here are 4 questions for you about the film:

1. What was your favorite part?
2. What was your least favorite part?
3. Did you ever get hypnotized before?
4. Fist of 5? 5 = best film you've ever seen. 0 = I hated that film so much.

First of all, let me say that I am honored and humbled to be your guest answerer of questions. Although people might be disappointed it's not Peter.
1. My favorite part ... spoiler alert... is when she finally runs away from the prison/hospital/institution where this Mr. Charcot was keeping her.

2. Her standing there naked while they marked her body using a marker and treating her like an animal.

3. Nope. And I'm not sure she was either. It didn't look like other movies I've seen where they've hypnotized a person. I think she may have been pretending.

4. 3 = Because I found the subject interesting and I will probably do a little research on this time period and what they called women "hysterics".

We here at alittleleeway are honored to have you.

(Sometimes I like to pretend that this blog is a small publishing house, run by lots of people. Thus the "we.")

1. My fave part....spoiler alert...when they finally had sex. That had to happen.

2. Least fave: Your least fave AND the scene where they poke that metal rod through her arm. Geezlouise.

3. I would like to be hypnotized. I read a bit about Charcot last night. He did a lot of stuff that's not about hysteria and hypnosis and has many conditions named after him. I warn you: Don't look up Charcot atrophy of the foot. You will not like what you see.

4. I'm going to go with you and also give it a 3. Interesting. Dark. Kind of good.

Love your guest!
My answer (in case you are interested) to #3 is yes I have been hypnotized. I came away with a tape I was supposed to listen to every day. It didn't work but I listened to the tape every night as I went to sleep and it worked great as a relaxation/go to sleep tape!

From PA:

First off, let me say that I read this blog ages ago (yesterday?) and desperately wanted to know about the film. So, why didn't I know to read the comments? Second, excellent comments, thank you! Third, how would you compare the perspective of this film to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? Keep your response to one page.

Sincerely,
PA Tech-no-Non.

I feel like I know A Place at the Table, but I don't really watch movies... I'll have to look into this.

I think the teaching professional will survive Arnie Duncan and Common Core.

Linda, I listen to podcasts like that. V. helpful for falling to sleep. Still curious about getting hypnotized tho. I'm reading more about it.

PA... Comparing the film to One Flew: The men seemed to be having a better time together in One Flew. In Augustine, the residents/prisoners were pretty grouched out.

MM, Place at the Table is next Sunday. They play a lot of food movies in this series. Not my favoritest genre. I guess I'll see it.
