The Collection

When I finished chapter 12, I wanted to be done with all obligations for awhile. But that was not to be. I have finished in the nick of time, allowing myself 3 days to work on a talk I'm going to give in another city, far away, very soon. Boy am I bored of going into this office I thought to myself as I walked across the sunny street. After fooling around with email I decided to try to work on the talk, only to discover that I did not bring the folder I needed, the folder with the talk transparencies . I felt more bored than aggravated because for some reason, I lose this folder every time I give this talk. I headed home and as I sat rifling through every file drawer for the 100th time, I thought, "It's so boring to lose this talk again." Finally I found my folder, but a few slides seemed to be missing. Of course. I never put them back correctly after I give the talk. I just shove them back in the folder so I can lose them later. In the midst of all the tedious searching, I received an email from friend Sam, renowned author, who is gathering true stories here. I asked him if he wanted anything boring, but he didn't email back yet. Inspired by Sam, I'm soliciting boredom stories about boredom. Anytime you felt bored or thought you might be getting a little bored, just describe your experience here in the comments section. You've probably been fairly bored reading this blog of late. I don't blame you one bit.

Bored today, I filled the birdfeeder without you even asking me once. That's about four to five less times than you usually have to do it. I found it, actually, not that boring. Maybe I'll start doing it regularly now. Or maybe not. -TD

I think my daughter Emma is teaching me about boredom. She was addicted to the tv until about 10 days ago. She now makes a statement every 10 minutes, either "no TV" or "I hate TV". We don't have cable and we only get 3 stations. We have 10 of the same boring videos that she's finally tired of. But what really surprised me was when Philip asked her why she hates the TV out of the blue. Her response was "Emma". I made an Emma dvd about 2 weeks ago, nicely edited with lots of music. I love this video and watched it over and over. Everytime guests came over, I showed it. The last time I showed it (about 10 days ago) Emma went hysterical. Now I understand. TV is boring, but to see your self over must even be more so. Sorry Emma.

Thanks Judy for a fine boredom story of boredom. I can't wait to see your kiddo tomorrow. I got her a book about a fawn and a scarf that belly dancers wear. And I got you and your husb some jam, made in this town.

Boredom: Watching everyone else go about their normal lives but I couldn't because I didn't have the energy or because of the bone pain. This is a boredom that I will remember for the rest of my life.

This could be a story of boredom... I was so bored on a lazy July 4th afternoon, I rented the second season of Medium (the tv show) and watched eight episodes in a row..except the problem is, I wasn't really bored. There was something about the dynamics of that fictional family in that show that was soothing to me. I am still working out why. So maybe its a bizarre story. Its hard to be bored for long, because even when you are thinking about being bored, you can find something interesting to contemplate about the fact that you are bored.

Can't tell you how jealous we are of your NYC trip and your visit with that cute girl and her mom.

While we are having a pretty good week -- San Jose Giants game (single A ball) with fireworks afterward a few days ago, a long (+/- 9 miles ) hike in the Santa Cruz mountains yesterday followed by dinner outdoors at a Sicilian restaurant, and a pedicure this morning -- NYC it is not.

Oh, and did I mention that our oven started belching smoke for no apparent reason this morning as we were preheating it for the croissants? A full cleaning (Yeah, Bob!)and some more time at 500 degrees "seems" to have done the trick, but we are still watching carefully. And wondering how to get rid of that smell....

When I was younger, I used to spend my summer vacations with my grandparents in NJ. Although I cherish these times, sometimes it would be boring. So boring, that I spent one summer teaching myself how to do a "bridge" shuffle with cards, and often played the card game "War" against MYSELF!

The only time I get really bored is during "forced tv watching" times. Sometimes my family members only want to watch tv, and furthermore, they would like my company during their watching. If I do something else that would be far less boring for me, they occasionally feel that I am not giving them enough "face" time, I am not sharing in their choice of entertainment. So sometimes I force myself to sit and watch thinking the whole time how very boring it is. I can't drift off and think my own thoughts as I would during any other potentially boring moment like waiting in a queue because they desire my interaction during the tv watching. I find watching tv boring 99% of the time, excluding "Mystery" and "Masterpiece Theater". I have tried to convince them to remove the offending device(s) from the house, but they refuse.

Some Girl Scout Vest pictured. To me writing this or spending any time on the computer not paying bills as a sign of excessive free time so I must be bored as we speak. Or I am just having a tiny bit of free time which may not be the same as being bored but as it is so unusual I can't tell yet.
