They were executed by firing squad when the war was nearly over. I cried to read of their bravery and their love for France, even when France didn't always reciprocate. Moise loved to collect art. He has a little room off his dining room filled with four walls of porcelain china. Every cup, plate, serving bowl <a href="https://parisdiarybylaure.com/350-birds-painted-china-musee-camondo/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">has a beautiful bird on it</a>. I want one of these bird cups a LOT. Moise Camondo left his house and his collections to Paris to be made into a museum. He wanted nothing touched, nothing added, nothing taken away. The guy was a maniac about his stuff. I learned about him from a friend who read Edmund De Waal's book, Letters to Camondo. de Waal is a ceramicist, so CB... you might want to look into these peeps. </p><p>I stood in Marie Curie's lab and office today. Both have been decontaminated so have no fear. Curie's work and life story is brilliant and fascinating. I was sad to read that her husband got hit by a horse drawn carriage and died instantly, but though she was devastated, she carried on without him. Picked up a 2nd Nobel Prize a few years later. <a href="https://media.gettyimages.com/id/515578850/fr/photo/madame-curie-noted-physical-chemist-poses-in-her-paris-laboratory-undated-photograph.jpg?s=612x612&w=gi&k=20&c=CQDO38HJgdaNbJzljxoBCkLcoEFsFRY6LnlO1V1igm0=" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Marie Curie is my hero at this point in time</a>.</p><p>The trip has been sensational, but the walking has gotten a bit extreme. She was friends with Modigliani, Zadkine, Chagall, the usual suspects. Fun fact: Orloff used 7 year old Ida Chagall as a model for a cool sculpture of a little girl with big hair. Orloff made figurative sculptures, animal sculptures, mother and child sculptures. I saw her work at the Zadkine Museum yesterday afternoon. <a href="https://media.beauxarts.com/uploads/2022/12/rv-8301-6-964x1342.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">I'm now a big Orloff fan</a>. It's good to remember that women were here and there as well, making cool stuff. The one and only Pierre Sang. We've been to his place before, but this time he was there and it was fun to see him in action. We had a window table so I could see him taking a break outside, checking his phone and smoking a cigarette. I wish he wouldn't smoke, but the 7 course dinner he produced was a dream come true. With umbrellas aloft, we headed to<a href="https://c8.alamy.com/comp/2AEFTHC/pere-lachaise-cemetery-famous-graves-paris-2AEFTHC.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> Pere Lachaise Cemetery</a>. We first looked for the grave of Balzac. Took awhile, but we eventually tracked him down. In addition to being a great writer, he drank over 50 cups of coffee each day. Then we searched for the mathematician, Gaspard Monge. After a spell, we gave up and began walking back. Minutes later, I glanced up to the left and there above me was the miraculous tomb of famed geometer Gaspard Monge! I was elated because I detest mission failures. We ended next to Jim Morrison, who has the only grave surrounded by police barriers. The plethora of fresh flowers and knickknacks atop Jim's body shows these to be mostly ignored. People love him madly. <p></p><p><a href="https://www.zadkine.paris.fr/en/zadkine/his-biography/exile-new-york-1941" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">We both agreed</a> Pere Lachaise has a lot to offer on a rainy day in Paris. </p>LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208588882516068765noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10736108.post-25918687300248678742024-03-12T05:40:00.002-05:002024-03-14T04:18:12.555-05:00SPRINGBREAK2024Day4<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwyd_5N0LteHjvqVo8RNo2kY4Uio99Hc4tc4JNAAJAB8WW7Z-WCZbmUEuzpSg6LArvJKSa39FBpwgr-_5PUf277WJ9KlYtV-Wv0D_aJydcXYwRyrrYnTQ9bFOmOCFKiKz_1DjBNHff_heWcYWOJY3lGE4o5AkVZToU38pMWRsJizVldDIcyONX3A/s4032/IMG_9519.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwyd_5N0LteHjvqVo8RNo2kY4Uio99Hc4tc4JNAAJAB8WW7Z-WCZbmUEuzpSg6LArvJKSa39FBpwgr-_5PUf277WJ9KlYtV-Wv0D_aJydcXYwRyrrYnTQ9bFOmOCFKiKz_1DjBNHff_heWcYWOJY3lGE4o5AkVZToU38pMWRsJizVldDIcyONX3A/s320/IMG_9519.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS-QHrePUn835OGfWtLtQoCy1XHVmYtUE3WXOv9rxX3IiLlg1PlGTHXWnRlV_nK0Z2Hq6OiEvTxp6e3as0bkohP4gqJZ7ydulU_D2UrwRm3BMWicxeWnARUTR1dyqqfGVMMHmql7QXlrqBuQaElvh7-pPrR4xjrQ-pcDZcY7iIp49uSzgFUXd-UA/s4032/IMG_9523.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS-QHrePUn835OGfWtLtQoCy1XHVmYtUE3WXOv9rxX3IiLlg1PlGTHXWnRlV_nK0Z2Hq6OiEvTxp6e3as0bkohP4gqJZ7ydulU_D2UrwRm3BMWicxeWnARUTR1dyqqfGVMMHmql7QXlrqBuQaElvh7-pPrR4xjrQ-pcDZcY7iIp49uSzgFUXd-UA/s320/IMG_9523.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvqUB_-8CMUOQP5Zbmbw_JMNCqWlFV0h8z-IU_ihaiIEHUh4UTF5N0t41x5TIJN5SjncJgry1R-rcASaCYnk2ilBPZZedxtcw9_zSEks2AqKzEaCGS5CAuHGC1nnxvOR9Xg1Gl8f-r2CvbhpdmJyZcqcTJbbTvdFQTSdQ_-cKOtCa9gck1TQKpOQ/s4032/IMG_9524.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvqUB_-8CMUOQP5Zbmbw_JMNCqWlFV0h8z-IU_ihaiIEHUh4UTF5N0t41x5TIJN5SjncJgry1R-rcASaCYnk2ilBPZZedxtcw9_zSEks2AqKzEaCGS5CAuHGC1nnxvOR9Xg1Gl8f-r2CvbhpdmJyZcqcTJbbTvdFQTSdQ_-cKOtCa9gck1TQKpOQ/s320/IMG_9524.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /> Jardin Des Plantes has displays about the history of cultivated plants in France going back to the BC's. So now I want to be a plant archaeologist. <p></p><p>While sitting in Eglise St. Nicolas I got a text from a friend whose Dad just died. I lit a candle for her and for him, but I didn't have any euros, so I squeezed a folded up dollar bill into the donation box. I don't <a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3d/Place_des_Vosges_vue_aérienne.png" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">think anyone will get in a huff about that</a>. </p><p>Sat in a cafe yesterday afternoon to get out of the rain. <a href="https://files.offi.fr/programmation/2208571/images/600/fb67140e971f5626a535fff0bbbc4efd.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Wrote in notebook. Drank coffee. Looked out the window.</a> An American family sat nearby. Mom, Dad, 2 young boys. There are a lot of Americans here right now, and we seem to be behaving ourselves. The 2 young boys were on the loud side, but they're kids. Give them a break. One of them kept saying, "It's Opposite Day" to everything his brother said. That whole Opposite Day thing got irksome, but I loved his improv insult to his bother, "You have a fat pudgy face. You have a punching bag face." Well done, American kid.</p><p>Ate at La Coupole last night. Creative spirits of the 1920s art world float about in there. I think we might have been sitting near a Chagall column but can't track down any confirmation. If I had extra time, I'd do some research and make a helpful map matching columns to artists. </p><p>More Americans near us at dinner, but I'm not mad at that. If you feel like reading some of the highlights, you should. <p></p><p>Pétanque players in Luxembourg Garden talked away, nary a ball was tossed. Saw Saint Sulpice and visited with the Delacroix paintings. Husbandman pondered what Jesus would say about all the churches built in his name if he were to reappear. Probably he would feel that his message hadn't quite gotten across, but we like these places nonetheless. </p><p> <a href="https://museemaillol.com/en/expositions/cheri-samba-in-the-jean-pigozzi-collection/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Cheri Samba made</a> our acquaintance at Musee Maillol. The French children greatly amused Husbandman, but for me the experience felt too much like recess duty. </p><p>We ate a fine dinner at a small place called L'oulette, but discovered back at the hotel that I had taken someone else's raincoat. I blame the restaurant people for piling 10 coats on one coat hook jammed between the door and a table of diners. <a href="https://mediaim.expedia.com/destination/9/7527b7a4618d0fb0b418383a226344e9.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">After some sleuthing</a>, raincoat retrieval took place at Place de Bastille this morning. The Massachusetts man (initials ZZ) who took my raincoat wasn't overly pleasant, but when forced he did admit that our jackets were similar. </p><p>Slow start this morning, but soon we'll head to the Pompidou. </p><p>C'est tres bon. </p>LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208588882516068765noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10736108.post-4644772186331546732024-03-09T04:51:00.001-05:002024-03-09T04:51:34.076-05:00SpringBreak2024Day1<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8MVQm9rmxhyphenhypheneOzrzndchz52h4UVMLVFLA1hLTy5vfT_OdWkpw_AVRNr7oT3v5v98GL9BtZG4UfU2mya9uL1-p7wqg_88u6Mgqi0PHZtt2Wd7GRbtuXUUK892vjUv5VsgaRRQnIramrJbfsIykbBAkV6qi8R4CwXB1-m8yrEOU6LUhcOu5SlsLkQ/s4032/IMG_9487.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8MVQm9rmxhyphenhypheneOzrzndchz52h4UVMLVFLA1hLTy5vfT_OdWkpw_AVRNr7oT3v5v98GL9BtZG4UfU2mya9uL1-p7wqg_88u6Mgqi0PHZtt2Wd7GRbtuXUUK892vjUv5VsgaRRQnIramrJbfsIykbBAkV6qi8R4CwXB1-m8yrEOU6LUhcOu5SlsLkQ/s320/IMG_9487.HEIC" width="240" /></a></div><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_eJ6kUSdFu-Xmr4DZUuCxSmpn2_1qPjbyjlFW1-VAKNeG8JVx0woEY1z0Dvko7VIcY9kquDexRcTQvCKXvo_ApUP9Qvs3QeMpdkyx4eyclFsWlggCyDHDEoxSlSRIWaRxmYu8VkGWv7RN1WVEA4w-s_1zir1y9t5SMt2fX42PVwo1GpRiNsNOng/s4032/IMG_9493.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_eJ6kUSdFu-Xmr4DZUuCxSmpn2_1qPjbyjlFW1-VAKNeG8JVx0woEY1z0Dvko7VIcY9kquDexRcTQvCKXvo_ApUP9Qvs3QeMpdkyx4eyclFsWlggCyDHDEoxSlSRIWaRxmYu8VkGWv7RN1WVEA4w-s_1zir1y9t5SMt2fX42PVwo1GpRiNsNOng/s320/IMG_9493.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbEwpCky9rReOIxIHlbTG-EWsW9X-B6oHYPUg8wi4jh8B4pjCkjjDZdKAoK_bRcagPR5YMZ1kiZTeYq6SS6b6QndmYdf8gcolkFmw9zzZwu6qMYC6P7xA9sJkvFiPFMJgYFIrNEDREIeRCiAIglHuSy_uEMkrrk5umsk8ncNL0Yv0-NJnzceV-YQ/s4032/IMG_9490.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbEwpCky9rReOIxIHlbTG-EWsW9X-B6oHYPUg8wi4jh8B4pjCkjjDZdKAoK_bRcagPR5YMZ1kiZTeYq6SS6b6QndmYdf8gcolkFmw9zzZwu6qMYC6P7xA9sJkvFiPFMJgYFIrNEDREIeRCiAIglHuSy_uEMkrrk5umsk8ncNL0Yv0-NJnzceV-YQ/w300-h400/IMG_9490.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>Yesterday we arrived. Walked about hither thither and yon. <p></p><p> I love walking around the 3rd and 4th Arrondissements. The streets are skinny but busy with small courtyards and gardens tucked away here and there. We walked into the Church of Saint Merri. Named after Saint Mederic, the patron saint of the right bank. When he was a young monk he ate only bread dipped in barley water twice a week. Later he went on some pilgrimages and worked miracles along the way. You can't help but love this guy.</p><p>When we were here last, <a href="https://www.familinparis.fr/wp-content/uploads/photos-familinparis-2021/quartier/la-fontaine-stravinsky-centre-pompidou-©FamilinParis-768x1024.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">the Stravinsky Fountain was being repaired</a>. So great to see it spinning and spitting away in its playful cheer. Fun Fact: Jean Tinguely also made the Chaos sculpture that lives in Columbus, Indiana. He made kinetic sculptures and was also the first director of the Pompidou Center. He was married to <a href="https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51jjJxFMsQL._AC_UF1000,1000_QL80_.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Niki de Saint Phalle</a> for awhile and she also made cool sculptures and illustrated her own little books. </p><p>In short, we're off to a good start.</p><p><br /></p>LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208588882516068765noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10736108.post-87156708558609671812024-02-27T21:26:00.001-05:002024-02-27T21:26:21.919-05:00The Re-Entry<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBl4kH6RO5D5MM1TsiXfn1kg6Vr2mgrAwlG0viUKXdX7FxTJWTdBKhyphenhyphenYay5Gna8OuLH56t3AGYAtQslbakPREdFsSJ3wyUj32cb_p7rc9vQGlPUjrPH8RkUSJ9UeGNIggWv_LHX367GjcuW7KhG58pQGlK6I5IM-7LPuYJbl7xr5FLmsSfdsa18A/s4032/IMG_9444.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBl4kH6RO5D5MM1TsiXfn1kg6Vr2mgrAwlG0viUKXdX7FxTJWTdBKhyphenhyphenYay5Gna8OuLH56t3AGYAtQslbakPREdFsSJ3wyUj32cb_p7rc9vQGlPUjrPH8RkUSJ9UeGNIggWv_LHX367GjcuW7KhG58pQGlK6I5IM-7LPuYJbl7xr5FLmsSfdsa18A/w300-h400/IMG_9444.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><br /> And I'm back. Last week he spent days talking about my mom being in the hospital. When I reminded him that she's been gone for 5 years, he said, "I know, but we have to visit her in the hospital. She could be dying." So that's been sad and confusing, but today he was fine and we talked about the Battle of the Bulge. </p><p>Soon Husbandman and I will be on spring break. Use of sunscreen obviously topped the tip list, but we should also avoid repeatedly using the same facial expressions. Come to find out, repeated expressions can and will lead to folded skin that eventually can't get unfolded. </p><p>Too late for me to do much about my wrinkly visage. <a href="https://media.cnn.com/api/v1/images/stellar/prod/231214135232-03-american-fiction-movie.jpg?c=original" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Repeated facial expressions</a> are an essential part of the teaching profession and I've used the tight lipped mouth with piercing eyes and furrowed brow expression multiple times a day for 40 years now. Smiling also wrinkles the heck out of your face, and I frequently smile to foster meaningful relationships. Plus I find a ton of stuff in 3rdland amusing as all get out.</p><p>Pass on this info to any young teachers you know. His name was Russell Hammer. <p></p><p>I'm always in search of stories to share with my dad on our daily phone calls. I knew Mr. Hammer's obituary in the NYT would be just the ticket. Of course Dad knew all about the Marauders, so as I read facts from the obituary, he added facts from his background knowledge. </p><p>Even after the phone call, I can't stop thinking about the Marauders. They went through hell trekking through Burma fighting the Japanese in 1943. They only had what they could carry. Every once in awhile, parachutes would drop extra supplies. Between parachute drops, the Marauders were starving, so they threw grenades into a river, skimmed the dead fish from the surface, and cooked them in their helmets. </p><p>Cooked the fish in their helmets. Today's story was written by someone who was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackamore" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">married to a cowboy</a> for many decades. By the time the bell rang for dismissal each day, I felt wrung out like an old kitchen sponge. My energy <a href="https://centromundolengua.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mundolengua-sevilla-ernestovillalba-4oct2016-1647-scaled.jpg" target="_blank">reserves were so depleted I worried</a> that I might not be able to drive the mile back to my house. </p><p> I like Halloween as a citizen, but as a teacher I do not care for it. Because of this year's unfortunate timing, my fatigue built up and by Friday I had a sore throat. On Saturday I couldn't move off the sofa. As I languished, I caught up on Golden Bachelor and watched movies. Flora and Son was good. Appropriate Behavior even better. Midnight Run and Blue Jay are older classics. See any of these films if you want to.</p><p>Most 3rdLanders <a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.odonohoearchive.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/1-Castleisland-Church-of-Ireland-2011.jpg" target="_blank">had a plethora of fun stories</a>, but come to find out, the kids with the blow up costumes had some sadness. A dinosaur inflatable worn by one third lander deflated halfway through trick or treating. He carried on in his own attire, a pain to explain to the candy givers. Another 3rdlander skipped Halloween altogether when his Sponge Bob inflatable went bust 20 minutes before T-or-T departure time. His parent dashed back to the shop but was denied an exchange. Annoyed beyond all get out, this kid opted for staying home. As we all know, some losses are so devastating that recovery is impossible. You may want to boycott that store next year. At the very least, <a href="https://i0.wp.com/curioustravelbug.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Seville-Real-Alcázar-Fountain-Pool.jpg?w=1024&ssl=1" target="_blank">save all packaging and receipts</a>. Overall, I do not recommend the blow up costumes. Too much heartache.</p><p>On Wednesday a kid came to school wearing a Xmas sweatshirt. Charlie Brown. Tiny Piano. Pathetic tree with red ornament. That one sweatshirt led to an extended, wild mashup of Halloween recollection with fervent Christmas plans. </p><p>We're in holiday hoedown mode and I need to figure out how to stay healthy. It's not going to be a super season of holiday cheer if I end up in a coffin by New Year's.</p><p><br /></p><p> </p>LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208588882516068765noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10736108.post-36957034399256364182023-10-28T17:31:00.003-05:002023-10-29T08:47:14.134-05:00The Bowl<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvAuI5BoukHVhFmULfGpShpbYT3SciFOYdC4iremxnKo13LITUX-pvTCYsDfwIl9Yeb_bJNT7SYN1fEP9XeiInZsAzf5z4lXuDgerjwzj4P9v3yPxpMPmZKaq7T002DXO5vALgQ7N6nqBoFvDjUkpKZzZAsmFne2dl6K5qW-FQebkIajna8Yhycg/s4032/IMG_9052.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvAuI5BoukHVhFmULfGpShpbYT3SciFOYdC4iremxnKo13LITUX-pvTCYsDfwIl9Yeb_bJNT7SYN1fEP9XeiInZsAzf5z4lXuDgerjwzj4P9v3yPxpMPmZKaq7T002DXO5vALgQ7N6nqBoFvDjUkpKZzZAsmFne2dl6K5qW-FQebkIajna8Yhycg/w480-h640/IMG_9052.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div><br /> Husbandman and I walked around <a href="https://bowerandbranch.com/cdn/shop/products/TulipPoplar6.jpg?v=1644000463" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center this morning</a>. We also visited the gift shop in search of a singing bowl. There were many. <p></p><p>I wasn't surprised that Husbandman was a natural with the singing bowls, while I bumbled and bungled along. Bottom line: he's musical I'm not. The gift shop man stood near me redirecting and advising me as I misplayed the various bowls while Husbandman's bowl sang out vibrations throughout the store. </p><p>I bought a bowl anyway because I've always wanted one and I'm pretty sure I can pick up better singing bowl technique at some point in the future. </p><p> You may remember I recently wrote about my love for my Deagan dinner chimes. I'm now 9 x 7 and Husbandman is 8 X 8. We celebrated at restaurants, exchanged cool gifts, and felt all the love of fam and friends. <p></p><p>As a celebratory birthday extension, we ventured out to an apple orchard early yesterday morning. We walked among the apple trees, split an apple dumpling with ice cream and listened to music. We joined the hordes of foliage mongers soaking up autumnal beauty. We didn't buy apple cider and that's a regret. </p><p>Later that same day, we attended a screening of Killers of the Flower Moon. Excellent. You should see it if you feel like it. It's one of those movies that propels me to the internets to gather facts and opinions about our horrific history. </p><p>My personal connection with the film is a fascinating tale and I will share it thusly. </p><p>In the fall of 2022, while visiting kin in Seattle, Washington, I unexpectedly discovered, and fell in love with, the <a href="https://www.madeinchicagomuseum.com/single-post/j-c-deagan-co/" target="_blank">melodic harmonics of Deagen's historic chimes and longed to have my own</a>. Unbeknownst to me, #30Something, aware of my obsessive desire, surreptitiously endeavored to procure a Deagan oeuvre. Late in 2022, after extensive searching, she found, and purchased, authentic Deagan chimes and gifted these to me at our annual holiday gift exchange. Come to find out, the seller of the chimes had enclosed a note that these very chimes (which I now own) were used as a prop in Scorcese's film, Killers of the Flower Moon! As you know, we viewed the film on October 21, 2023 at a private screening. While we did not see the chimes, we firmly believe that they were probably on the table of sound effect props featured toward the movie's end. (No spoilers, but great scene). Alas, the chimes were not played, but this is still a cool story. <a href="https://images.reverb.com/image/upload/s--F0eIPX6S--/f_auto,t_large/v1550714254/ypfhig5mtvf2eug84kgi.jpg" target="_blank">I ring the chimes each day</a> and they never fail to bring me joy. </p><p>Birthday Week: Solid 5 on the Fist of 5. </p>LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208588882516068765noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10736108.post-42676527450758043242023-10-15T20:04:00.002-05:002023-10-15T20:04:39.253-05:00The Lineage<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6de2ya3cnEe4TyllP-HunCm6sfyqDR0UI_X-qf1Nkny-4nwu9CWQBmu8eeHKLxQa1OIrB9y6EFqQjrc0UlUXgT_DwUTnfoMgvT24ndxf0BYrJqOhZ5Yz4NB4IGW6bJwvdyEFv7EZtxS1SeWqmqX-mk1tLMs5MDinJfS_Pz4Me3CkpTSuiBJhzjg/s4032/IMG_9021.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6de2ya3cnEe4TyllP-HunCm6sfyqDR0UI_X-qf1Nkny-4nwu9CWQBmu8eeHKLxQa1OIrB9y6EFqQjrc0UlUXgT_DwUTnfoMgvT24ndxf0BYrJqOhZ5Yz4NB4IGW6bJwvdyEFv7EZtxS1SeWqmqX-mk1tLMs5MDinJfS_Pz4Me3CkpTSuiBJhzjg/w480-h640/IMG_9021.heic" width="480" /></a></div><br /> I'm back from a trip down south to visit my dad. We saw it all.</p><p><a href="https://bannedbooksweek.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/BBWC_2023_slides_LFRDay-1140x500.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">On our second day,</a> we drove over to Stinesville Quarry Festival. I'm sad to tell you that I've never spent time in this charming neighboring town, population 203.</p><p>Highlight of the festival was the pie auction. The auctioneers skillfully drove up the bidding and the apple caramel pie went for 200$. Two water pies ("poor man's sugar pies") went for about 25$ each. Generous when you get the backstory on water pie. Originating in the Great Depression, water pie is made with water and a few other ingredients. I'm wondering why someone would enter a pie contest with a water pie, but Stinesville is a land of mystery.</p><p>Both nights we zipped around town for Lotus Festival. Another great festival, full of unexpected pleasures. Check out <a href="https://www.riotartists.com/artist-roster/san-salvador/" target="_blank">San Salvador from France</a> some time if you feel like listening to topnotch Occitan polyphony. </p><p>Our time together was delightful. <a href="https://img.thedailybeast.com/image/upload/c_crop,d_placeholder_euli9k,h_1688,w_3000,x_0,y_0/dpr_1.5/c_limit,w_1600/fl_lossy,q_auto/v1669904737/221130-oconnor-bhutan-hero_p5ua9c" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Fall's off to a great start</a>. </p><p><br /></p>LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208588882516068765noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10736108.post-35204286712778156232023-09-23T17:08:00.003-05:002023-09-24T08:38:06.875-05:00The Festival<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcCZy3LrUfZXFEknW_xI3MpunKP_6LuxvmzfPM1ffbnuLStQdrkYjioJV3kjFHpBZOyO1-BHguJJpewLsj_0IWnKWUWUMYBmaQYsth3pvR9sA6FjBi39mHPKPC4UguLsZTrumCOQA7XT2FDAoIT_gT882kqfRzMDo-pbr0muZyTQ1NtHw2spM00Q/s4032/IMG_8908.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcCZy3LrUfZXFEknW_xI3MpunKP_6LuxvmzfPM1ffbnuLStQdrkYjioJV3kjFHpBZOyO1-BHguJJpewLsj_0IWnKWUWUMYBmaQYsth3pvR9sA6FjBi39mHPKPC4UguLsZTrumCOQA7XT2FDAoIT_gT882kqfRzMDo-pbr0muZyTQ1NtHw2spM00Q/w480-h640/IMG_8908.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div><br /> Autumnal Greetings, One and All. Today, we bring news of the Monroe County Fall Festival in Ellettsville. <p></p><p>We were there at noon to watch the parade, featuring Ellettsville Elite. The grand marshall was a man who <a href="https://cdn.download.ams.birds.cornell.edu/api/v1/asset/295442571/1800">owns a small business that sells signs</a>, vehicle graphics and window tinting. Other paraders included school communities, church folk, tractor drivers, young cloggers, equestrians, parade princesses, and firepeople in sky blue trucks. </p><p> Missing from the parade: floats. </p><p>Don't want to be overly critical, but floats are parade essentials. I recommend a careful reading of How to Organize a Parade when organizing for next year. <a href="https://voiceofaction.org/organize-local-parade/" target="_blank">This website clearly states</a>:</p><p><span face="Roboto, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.85); font-size: 17.000059px;"><span style="color: #800180;"><b><u><i>One exciting element to consider for your parade is the inclusion of floats.</i></u></b></span></span></p><p>We're not mad at you, Ellettsville, but next year we sure would love to see some floats. Think it over.</p><p>On the good side, the paraders threw out gobs of candy. We stood near a mom whose kids had a whole bag full. I joked that the mom could use the parade candy for <a href="https://alittleleeway.blogspot.com/2016/11/the-halloween-memories.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Halloween handouts</a> next month. Mom told me that she was planning exactly that. Doy. Way to state the obvious, leeway. </p><p> I nabbed a couple of Double Bubbles. Husbandman scored a mini-3Musketeers. </p><p>After the parade we moseyed over to the festival booths. We watched some young cloggers and HM ate a pulled pork sandwich. </p><p><a href="https://www.eatingwell.com/thmb/vhfypwJc99sWzLL0R9BRQNzDtwA=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/pumpkin-wheelbarrow-333056599cfe413caf2e086427c4e092.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">It's official. Surprisingly little mention of apple butter (ab) there. We did find one booth selling ab so we bought a jar. I'm hoping Husbandman can make some biscuits tomorrow so we can partake of this historic delicacy. Come to find out, ab has been around since the Middle Ages. <p></p><p><br /></p>LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208588882516068765noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10736108.post-47095045746424817162023-09-10T08:44:00.003-05:002023-09-10T09:08:17.990-05:00The Summer Sorrows<p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_YvpkS_oHFsbJtscKpgBhXkdSa-skPJml4moqlUnNnVoaGJ_FUGh4gpYouBcHYAsLAaAVFihAdLTjlcNKPlQBA7Goe7y_ZscbvQXd2UoNAmRqzSeGMTuaBZ-Hb1PGzUMeJXqfmZ7NtqA18Q1phAaOvN--ylLlNntU_NefhDdaMI8NTIcpCNZKEg/s4032/IMG_8865.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_YvpkS_oHFsbJtscKpgBhXkdSa-skPJml4moqlUnNnVoaGJ_FUGh4gpYouBcHYAsLAaAVFihAdLTjlcNKPlQBA7Goe7y_ZscbvQXd2UoNAmRqzSeGMTuaBZ-Hb1PGzUMeJXqfmZ7NtqA18Q1phAaOvN--ylLlNntU_NefhDdaMI8NTIcpCNZKEg/w480-h640/IMG_8865.jpeg" width="480" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Praying Mantis on the Playground</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAkaDNSOesZS-8f2ufG_sKUmZN7Aa34lLnlaGrcdQMXqXxxehhRAOawsUWWvH25ftU5l69v15qlT_M9Yx9Sfjkwgm4-303_OThb6oGtDk_pt2QiMDOYJxbZolVUEKWlhsZyC84ecuSaUKEXPWyL48djcapMabU79_Ktr6rfKDrIDIQRJ_MZ3IFWA/s4032/IMG_8873.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAkaDNSOesZS-8f2ufG_sKUmZN7Aa34lLnlaGrcdQMXqXxxehhRAOawsUWWvH25ftU5l69v15qlT_M9Yx9Sfjkwgm4-303_OThb6oGtDk_pt2QiMDOYJxbZolVUEKWlhsZyC84ecuSaUKEXPWyL48djcapMabU79_Ktr6rfKDrIDIQRJ_MZ3IFWA/w300-h400/IMG_8873.jpeg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nature Art created by 3rdLander</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfGBG6uOfabzKrMHMnoYSoym9HwSsOr7hrt7kIc_0goWJOEjKvWKpWFUpWtz8rKlR17PIhY8PvZGSltGlZoOdMmXiTXxla1W2MvLe4_CUMzs36Dk8xnT4X1v8Fzu8jgbj2FyOSWAkltLIfl_lZk5I0t4ivgz_HolYAnc8Ed5cMk-Bq2ikV3fOJSA/s4032/IMG_8879.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfGBG6uOfabzKrMHMnoYSoym9HwSsOr7hrt7kIc_0goWJOEjKvWKpWFUpWtz8rKlR17PIhY8PvZGSltGlZoOdMmXiTXxla1W2MvLe4_CUMzs36Dk8xnT4X1v8Fzu8jgbj2FyOSWAkltLIfl_lZk5I0t4ivgz_HolYAnc8Ed5cMk-Bq2ikV3fOJSA/s320/IMG_8879.jpeg" width="240" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nature Art created by another 3rdLander</td></tr></tbody></table><br /> These are our last days of summer. 3 more weeks of hell. Hate to pule like a cry baby complainer, but summer is not my favorite season. 6 reasons why summer is bad:<p></p><p>1. ever present sensation that my skin is burning off my bones whenever I risk a trip outside.</p><p> 2. disgusting slathering of sticky, smelly sunscreen on my exposed skin that sometimes gets in my eyes causing intense stinging when mixed with sweat.</p><p>3. unflattering summer attire, such as shorts and tee shirts. Not a good look for anyone, especially me.</p><p>4. irritating sound of bugs buzzing next to my ears as I take the occasional rare walk through shaded forests. </p><p>5. desperate panicky anxiety about being trapped inside air conditioned spaces (due to bugs, burning bones, sunscreen, etc.). </p><p>6. overwhelming fear and sadness about my contribution to climate change with excessive use of air conditioning.</p><p>Not a comprehensive list. I haven't included comments about the <a href="https://www.benchmarkpt.com/blog/most-common-summer-injuries-in-adults/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">various summer dangers we all face</a>, such as fires and skin cancer, but I will point out one critical issue with ye olde barbecue grille. We aren't grillers, so we don't have to worry about swallowing wire grill brush bristles, but lots of people are, and do. Stray wire bristles lodge in the digestive tract and make life uncomfortable for thousands every year. Stop grilling immediately if you don't want to spend your last days of summer in the ER. Look for alternatives to the wire bristle grill brushes. Maybe try grill floss.</p><p>To be fair and balanced, I'll now focus on the few things I like about summer: </p><p>A. I love the summer blockbusters on the big screen. I saw Equalizer 3 last weekend. <a href="https://www.dexerto.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=3840,quality=75,format=auto/https://editors.dexerto.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/04/the-equalizer-3-box-office-1.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Best movie ever</a>. I might see it again before it leaves the theaters and you should too it if you feel like it. Mission Impossible was also fun.</p><p>B. I love to swim. I'm also quite good at it. I swam competitively in high school and set records in the state of California on consecutive years. Look it up if you don't believe me. Unfortunately, I only swam a few times this summer because of the heat and the sunscreen issues mentioned above. </p><p>To wrap this up, here's a summer haiku:</p><p style="text-align: center;">Oh summer sorceress!</p><p style="text-align: center;"> My garden cries for water</p><p style="text-align: center;">Why do you burn us alive? </p><p style="text-align: left;">And ending on a good note: The temperature dropped yesterday. Husbandman and I traveled to the zoo. I wore leggings. We brought a picnic lunch and ate on a bench near the Kangaroo Crossing. My mood was calm and cheerful.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Also, just FYI: There's an International Chimpanzee Complex coming our way in 2024. <a href="https://www.indianapoliszoo.com/support-the-zoo/campaign/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Stay tuned</a>. </p><p style="text-align: left;">Also, just FYI: #1 Son's new album has been getting some great attention. <a href="http://www.quinnsternbergmusic.com/music" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">His release of Walking On Eggshells is by far the best thing that happened this summer. </a></p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p>LHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14208588882516068765noreply@blogger.com1
