The Conference

I will have a life again in a few weeks, but for now, I'll just keep blogging about school. I had a conference with a parent last week. The parent wanted to know about helping her sixer get ready for middle school. I won't supply the details, but over the 20 minutes of the conference I ended up recommending that the family not only watch The Simpsons, South Park and Sweet Sixteen, but also urged her strongly to get her sixer accounts on IM and My Space. That is wisdom that only a long-time teacher could impart. Hopefully the p will follow your advice and get the kid onboard with culture.

wrong post, I know, but I just *have* to defend pencils: a good mechanical pencil is great. I'm talking about the $2 or $3 dollar 0.5mm bad boys with a comfortable grip and a big eraser. My office won't spring for them so I buy my own in bright colors so I can always retrieve it when someone walks away with one.

The lead hardness thing: 2H is the notorious #2 of primary school lore. Avoid it like a cheap cocktail. HB is the softness I go for but there are even softer leads (2B etc). Yeah, they break if you try to push too hard (usually when the surface is too soft or you get too excited) but they're also expressive - like a little peice of artist's charcoal.

I'm a big fan of the pencil--the old-fashioned kind with eraser. But you've got the ticket, bob. You need a softer lead. A soft lead and some paper with a little "drag" to it makes you feel like you are really accomplishing something. You can FEEL the work getting done. I especially like them when they are getting a bit stubby because I've really done some work by the time I've gone halfway through a pencil. In moments of frustration, the soft wood also gives very nicely to the teeth. You can snap it right in half if you've a mind to. Call me crazy.

In my humble opinion, mechanical
pencils are an abomination. There is only one pencil, the "royalty"
of the pencil world: the Dixon
Ticonderoga #2. Keep it sharp and it will never fail you.

i guess the pencil thing isn't really settled, but a plurality of perspectives is always 'preciated.

the mom seemed willing. we made plans to have a drink together some time this summer. So I'll be able to follow up on the advice.

jw, remember when we felt like bass in the backseat because of ray's ruthless driving? how can you forget???
