Rosalyn told me she needed some new socks last weekend, but I told her she didn't. Later, the horrid condition of this sock made clear to me that she knows what she's talking about. She's thinking of making a sock puppet with it.  Posted by Hello

Galvanize

Beginning to sort through some belongings. Packing for the trip back shouldn't be too hard. We haven't acquired too much. But packing is another dissertation distraction, and that's predictably annoying. Guess if I blogged less, I'd probably get more done. But I'm going to put that thought out of my mind immediately.

Sick of Sick

Sunday I had an ocular migraine. I was just starting to feel better after a week of gross flu. The aura came on distorting an article I was enjoying about Angelina Jolie in US magazine. So we cancelled our movie plans and I headed to bed. Having the flu and a migraine in one week crosses a line of what's acceptable in terms of how sick you can be before everyone gets tired of dealing with you. Family members try to muster up sympathy, but you can see it's an effort. The cup of tea is delivered with a patient sigh. You hunch your way through the room and people don't avert their eyes from the television as they ask you how you are. I'm relieved that my invalidism ended before filial concern disappeared entirely.

Conscientious Objector

Bob Herbert's piece about Aidan Delgado inspires me this Mother's Day. Stationed in Iraq, Aidan witnessed crimes against Iraqi civilians by American troops. He confronted these actions and ultimately applied for conscientious objector status. He must have way proud parents, I bet.

This afternoon, I felt well enough to sit on my front step and watch Q bouncing the green ball. Check out how I caught this shot of the green ball in midair. I'm very impressed with myself. And of course with Q, who, by the way, homered in his baseball game last night.  Posted by Hello

Remember I wrote about my stomach ache on Monday?

I must be feeling better because I'm blogging again. After dinner on Monday with wine pals, JD and Savvy Mom, (Teacher Mom had to leave early) I got the stomach flu and have been in bed since then. I think I'm getting better. I ate some wheat thins. Posted by Hello

Slow Start Monday

I’m disappointed in my lack of productivity today. I produced nothing because of the following pitiful excuses. Or insurmountable obstacles, depending on your point of view:

I had to disrupt the sacred work schedule because the landlord came over to show the home to a potential renter.
It took me several hours to finish reading articles for a class I’m auditing.
I spent a not inconsiderable amount of time reading comments on ABD Mom’s blog about thongs.
I’ve been worrying all day about upcoming deadlines for conference presentations and committee work and all the packing and mailing of the stuff for the summer move back to mid-sized Midwestern college town.
My stomach hurt after eating a burrito for lunch. FYI: it still hurts now.
I did see a pileated woodpecker during my slog.

The Mystery of the Door Knocker

Selma and T.C. Steele lived in The House of the Singing Winds in Brown County.  For my weekly field trip I ventured over there for a tour o...
