The Wednesday Movie Challenge, including Spoilers
2 movies in the theater this weekend and 2 through glorious Netflix. First Netflix: Quinceanera. 14 year old girl gets pregnant before her big Quinceanera party, causing some problems in her family life. She goes to live with her cousin and her great uncle. Her cousin's also been kicked out of the house for being gay. The relationship between the 2 cousins is believable and dear. The other characters seemed fairly flat. The movie has a happy ending.
Midnight in Paris. Woody Allan's new movie. Owen Wilson goes back into Paris of the 20's and gets to meet all his fave writers and artists. Since Woody stopped acting, he always has the main character mimic his attributes. John Cusack did a particularly poor job of imitating Woody, as did Kenneth Branagh. Owen gets it right because he doesn't relinquish his own likeable Owen qualities while bumbling through Woody like lines. Rachel McAdams is good too.Even though she's supposed to be overly materialistic, she plays the role for laughs and it comes off. Happy ending here. Owen stays in Paris and breaks up with Rachel.
I've already talked about Cave of Forgotten Dreams. It's a film, not a cave I visited. Just want to clear that up for KC.. Werner Herzog directs, narrates, does the lighting. They could only have a 4 person film crew. My most fave Herzog film is Grizzly Man, the documentary where the guy gets eaten by a bear at the end. But this film is good too. But I wish there had been more info about the paleolithic people, and how they lived. Such great artists. How else did they spend their time? At the end, Herzog switches gears and talks about albino crocodiles. Not sure what that was all about.
Another Year. This movie got great reviews and was even described as "warm" and "loving." That's crazy talk. An idealized couple, Tom and Jerry, go through 4 seasons of gardening, working, entertaining friends, at their quaint British home. All their friends are alcoholic downers. So we get to see friends like Mary, Ken and Ronnie, visiting every season, creating awkward painful scenes through their alcoholism and depression. Tom and Jerry carry on, offering tea and exchanging knowing looks as they listen to their poor bumbling peeps who don't have what they have. Painful to watch, but well acted. At the end, the family and some of the wash ups have dinner together. And the washups don't talk too much. Just sit and stare. That seems to be what they should have been doing in the first place?
So, anyway, 4 movie reviews, including spoilers. It doesn't get much better than that. I for one enjoy the spoiler and I say, more spoilers, not less. If you want to see these movies, you should.

The only paleolithic paintings I've ever seen were up in the boundary waters, so it really could have been a cave nearby. And probably there is a cave like that around here somewhere , that just hasn't been discovered yet.
N, I'm making the most of every second. Our sons are watching Donnie Darko. Weird movie, great music!
