The Bean

Last time I went to Chicago, I didn't get to see the Bean at all. This time, I got to see a bit of the bean. Something's wrong with the bean and the people inside this tent are trying to fix it. But the bean is still remarkable. And next time I hope to see it in all its glory.

What the heck, as a naive CA resident, I must ask, is "the bean?"

Hey Ms. Morris, Excellent Question. If you click on the word "glory" on the post, you can see a big descriptor of the bean, the nickname for Cloud Gate, a new sculpture in Millenium Park, Chicago. I'm curious about how sculptures and buildings get nicknamed. Is it an act of resistance, or an act of affection? Your thoughts?

In my own limited experience, naming the thing for what it "really" looks like is an act of disdain. Supporting notes: the big black slab of stone (I mean sculpture) in front of San Francisco's Bank of America Building is known as the Banker's Heart, and the statue of Quetzalcoatl in downtown San Jose, alleged to represent the feathered serpent, is known as the pile of ... by most who view it.

we have a fountain near our civic center that everyone's dubbed "big slurpee." But I like it anyway.
There was a contest in Minn. to name the new Walker. So far, people call it Monkey Head.
