Stuff like this happens to me all the time. I usually take the same approach.
I solve that problem by bringing a box of candy.
If I remember ahead of time, I go to the Chocolate Emporium. If it's the last minute, I go to Marsh.

I generally ignore these requests and rely on the generosity of others. I just can't get it together for potlucks, and while I feel sorry, I don't beat myself up.
I have not been invited to one holiday gathering. Hmmm...
