The Groups
Our university has a good summer program for kiddos who are first generation college attenders. The students take a few classes, get some writing tips, and meet new friends. The university has had good success with retaining students who participate in this program.
I wholeheartedly support it.

At Downtown Colleg Prep, where I serve on the scholarship committee, we have learned a few things about first generation college students now that we have a few graduating classes under our belts.
Hooking them up with this type of program makes a huge difference for many of them.
Another thing that seems to make a big difference is to send them to University in groups; the singletons don't seem to fare as well. Having that built-in support group for kids who've -- likely anyway -- never been away from home alone seems to help.

How do you decide which words to link?
Most importantly, How do those nasty knee pics connect to first generation college grads.
I wish they would have had a program like that when I was a kid. I am first generation college, and the only one of eight in this generation to finish a B.A.
Liked the piece about the fish. Took me back to the Monroe County Square. Did you know my parents ran a shoe store on the south side of the square when I was a baby? They sat me next to the cash register. I wonder if that is why my mind picture of the Fish is from that corner of the square.

and ms. mary, iu has 300 in their groups program, and they're looking to increase it. i think it's cool that you're involved in this downtown college prep. is it a separate entity from the highschool???
