The Mystery of the Door Knocker

Selma and T.C. Steele lived in The House of the Singing Winds in Brown County.  For my weekly field trip I ventured over there for a tour of the house and the studio.  I've done this before but it was time for my refresher course so that I can apply for certification renewal.

T.C. Steele was a big deal and his wife Selma was no slouch. It was fun to learn about these important Hoosiers.

Steele made money painting portraits and brought himself happiness through his plein air landscapes.  He was a founding member of the Hoosier Group of artists, who were Impressionists.

The Steeles opened their house to visitors and there were often people milling about, enjoying the paintings, borrowing books, listening to music playing on the victrola.

The tour guide was passionate and informative about the Steeles, their home and the artwork.  When we left the house to head to the studio, I was the last person out.  She pointed at this door knocker and said, "Take a picture of this.  I'll tell you why later!"  This brought me cheer.  All through the talk at the studio, I thought about the door knocker.

When the tour ended I approached her and asked about the door knocker.  She replied, "Isn't it cool?  I have no idea who made it or where it's from.  I really want to find out."

This was a big letdown for leeway, as you can imagine. As I walked away she added,  "It's cool, right?"

I'm resolved to conduct my own research. I'm sending this photo out to the world asking for your help.  Please join me in my quest to solve the House of the Singing Winds Door Knocker mystery.  One friend told me she may have someone who can help.  FYI: The house was built in 1906. Let me know right away if you have ANY relevant info.  Even the smallest detail could be important.

Here are a few other photos:

Oh come on. That’s not the answer we’re looking for when you make us take a picture on the tour!
