The Review

Diane Ravitch criticized this book in a WSJ review in June. She doesn't think math should be politically relevant. She doesn't even believe it should be relevant. Ravitch's review has been taken up and repeated in conservative media and on right wing blogs lately and Rethinking Schools has published rebuttals. I don't have this book but I have many texts published by Rethinking Schools and they do exactly what Ravitch doesn't like---advocate the use of curriculum "to advance social justice." Wouldn't want to teach anyone to think about justice, would we? Geezlouise. Ravitch is such a punk.

I just read Ravitch's article and was very disturbed, but not surprised. The line that got to me the most was, "The students in American classes who FALL PREY to the political designs of their teachers and professors ..." Damn those predatory teachers concerned with social justice. HR

hey hr...I liked this line, "They (math educators today) are continually in search of a fix that will make it easy, relevant, fun, and even politically relevant." First off, get an editor okay? Second off...when did relevance become a bad thing for education. Since I just saw the Enron movie, I can see that teaching kids to critique and corporate greed/profit could really disrupt the "commonplace" some day. It was so good!

i wonder if she's tried irrelevant curriculum with eigth graders.

hi kc,your comment reminds me of something a teacher pal told me this week. A parent complained to him that his class needed to be more BORING in order for the kids to learn. wild

my friend renee sometimes get that criticism, too --

she's always doing crazy things like taking geography beyond coloring maps and memorizing. and instead of wanting their kids to understand the relationship between poverty and test scores, for example, they think the cities and mountain ranges should all be memorized.

This is very disturbing. My god, I've spent my whole life trying to instill a sense of social justice and political activism in my kids. But I can see how it would be disturbing to the right wing element. THINKING hordes? They'd be doomed.

KC, does renee blog?
Julie, we may need to get a little more vocal next year about the kinds of stuff we want for our kids in these good schools of ours.
Hi Chronic Roll, thanks for visiting. Have you seen the enron movie? Smartest Guys in the Room. We'll see what sentences get handed out this week for ebbers, then the enron monsters...

what about ebbers and his 25 years? does this offer us no hope that the enronmonsters will get some time?
